So glad to see you posting! Your picks are always the best- I went straight to my online library account and put this title on hold.

It is interesting what you say about fruit picking- when I was 10-12 years old, I picked blueberries during the summer to earn money. Many of the kids in our farming town counted on that money (for me it was "extra"). I wonder if things have changed so that they can't do that anymore.

We love October Sky. I was born in (and a lot of family still lives in) West Va. It's nice to see something that paints WV in a positive light (mostly). Anyway, I think it's awesome that you got to see the shuttle! Amazing.

In our one-room schoolhouse, we were participating in The Big Read which had chosen The Call of the Wild. I wanted our youngest readers to be involved, so they read this instead and absolutely loved it! They pretended to be sled dogs outside at recess for weeks!

I was just at my library, lamenting that all the "new" books looked... to be kind, less than remarkable. I checked my library after reading this post, and The Wright Brothers and Daniel Hale Williams are both available- not Jane Goodall which I would love to read. It is good to see that there are worthwhile new books are on the shelves!

I have filled my library card hold quota this week off of your recommendations. Thank you!

There are also some books that I'm interested in reading about a giraffe named Zarafa who was sent as a gift from the ruler of Egypt to the King of France in 1824. The reviews for the one for adults titled, "Zarafa: A Giraffe's True Story, from Deep in Africa to the Heart of Paris" whet my appetite. It's going on my soon to read list!

I also read this book a while ago and am rereading it now. I thought it was very good. Doing a mother/daughter read of this book is a great idea - considering the sometimes difficult content.
